Analysis from Carbon Brief shows that because the UK has phased out coal and renewable generation has more than doubled, our electricity was the cleanest ever last year.
Fossil fuels made up only 29% of the UK’s electricity in 2024 – the lowest level on record – while renewables reached a record-high 45% and nuclear was another 13%.
Gas-fired power stations remained the UK’s single-largest source of electricity in 2024, just ahead of wind, with the remaining sources of electricity (in order of contribution) nuclear, biomass, imports and solar.
Emissions associated with UK electricity supplies have fallen 74% in a decade.
